About the Town.

Dyer is a small unincorporated community located in Fish Lake Valley, in southwestern Esmeralda County, Nevada. Positioned near the Nevada–California border, Dyer lies at an elevation of approximately 4,900 feet and is surrounded by expansive desert plains and the towering White Mountains to the west.

The town has a population of just over 230 residents, Dyer is characterized by its remote setting, minimal development, and self-sustaining local economy.

The town was established in 1881 and named after Alex P. Dyer, its first postmaster. The area has long been inhabited by Indigenous peoples, particularly the Northern Paiute and Western Shoshone, whose cultural presence predates Euro-American settlement.
